Here’s to another month of 4 things about me on the 4th Friday of the month. I don’t know why but I have been doing a lot of reminiscing lately about the past. Not in my usually negative – what has my life turned into type of way? But more of what all of my interests have been throughout the years.
PHOTOJOURNALIST
I still remember my first camera. It was a bright pink camera that you had to drop in the film and push to go to the next frame. I had that camera for the longest time even though I never used it. Growing up I always wanted to take pictures. I wanted to take pictures especially of landscape and architecture.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be a travel photographer for National Geographic. I wanted to travel and take pictures of the world. I think everyone has an interesting story and I wanted (and still do) want to hear their stories. I also love animals and how/why they interact the way they do.
MUSIC
From sixth grade to end of my freshmen year of college, I loved music. And I was really good at it. I was naturally really good at it. I don’t remember how many years but I was always in All-State Band. I think I was always in First Band. I had some of the best band teachers in the world. I don’t think I would have stayed with it as long as I did without them. They were the reason that I wanted to be a music teacher.
I got a partial music scholarship to Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. I normally went to UCA’s band camp because it was in my hometown. I could stay at home and go there during the day. It was so much fun, and I met so many people from all over the state.
Being a music major was WAY harder than I thought. I also didn’t think it would require ALL OF MY TIME. When I went to HSU, I wanted both. I wanted a social life and music degree. At HSU you couldn’t have both. It never worked out well for you if you weren’t strong enough or tried to make everyone happy. The music people expect it to be YOUR WHOLE LIFE. Eat, sleep, breath, friends, family, etc. I didn’t want that. I wanted both. I wanted to be in a sorority and have friends throughout all majors and be in band on the side.
I think my one shining moment at HSU was the transition between marching band and symphonic band. We all had to try out for what chair we would be in the spring. It was a blind test. We had our prepared piece then a sight reading piece and the judges couldn’t see us. When the list got released, the clarinet section was SHOOK. I beat out so many of the “vets” and they were pissed. Mostly because I hate marching band and never memorized my music.
LAWYER
After music, I switched completely and wanted to be a lawyer. I was in the middle of transferring my sorority membership from HSU to UCA. My big was studying law to become an agent. I thought that would be the best job. I still do think it would be amazing. I love Rachel Luba.
There are still moments in my life that I think I could be a lawyer. There are definitely times in my life where I ACT like a lawyer. Me wanting to be a lawyer lasted about 2 years before I moved to a business degree.
SPORTS
When I graduated college I worked in sports for a few years. I absolutely loved it MOST of the time. There is one team that really ruined it. The staff that I worked with was just MEAN. I don’t know what it was but it was a struggle to come to work everyday.
I loved when I was working in sports because I got to meet so many different types of people. I also used to love the sports community. If I wasn’t going to do photojournalist, I wanted to work in sports – specifically the Arkansas Travelers. The Arkansas Travelers were my first minor league baseball game at their old ballpark. It was down by the zoo and interstate. The Travs ballpark was a basic ballpark with no frills, and those are my favorite type of ballparks.
Do any of these past jobs shock you? What’s a job you wanted growing up?
